The day before was the long distance and I felt pretty tired, but I was ready for one more performance. It was big relief when Daniel arrived in the leading group. I was ready to fight for medals. From the first control I was running with Swiss 1 and Norway 1. The terrain was fast so I it was important to keep the pace with other runners but still focus just on myself and do my orienteering. It went really well. My confidence was huge and until the controls 9 and 10 where I lost around 20 seconds to Matthieu Büehrer. I saw him everytime far in front of me but I was already too exhausted to speed up so I was just focusing on my race. Interesting was the final part after arena passage. The terrain was completely different. No more far view distance meadows, but totally green and closed forest where the key to success is “under control orienteering”. I made it through just with a small hesitation and then I suddenly met Matthieu running against me because he made a mistake. I was super excited because I knew my 3rd leg teammate Jakub is like a magician and that we are the favorites for first place. I was super satisfied with my performance and then I was just praying.
Efter att ha växlat i absolut tät så var det en nervös väntan på avgörandet i mål som bäst sammanfattades såhär:
By the time Jakub was in the “forest” I was just cooling down and chatting with other guys. Jakub made a mistake at second control and lost about 40 seconds to the lead. At this moment I didn’t want to watch the GPS. So nerve-racking! I was too curious not to watch it and when I saw Jakub in the lead it was (how Bruno would say) total emotion! Huge excitement filled my body and the dream of becoming a world champion was slowly becoming reality. After a while Jakub and Benjamin passed the arena. When we saw exhausted swiss runner and Jakub overcharged with energy for a super strong finish, we knew that he will make it. I don’t know how to describe the feeling when our teammate came out of forest first. That was the moment I will remember forever. My vocal cords almost died while we were cheering. We made it!
Även Elia som tog silver för Schweiz 2 säger såhär om dagen och loppet
Thanks to a good performance in the first leg of my teammate I could start in really a good positon but in the beginning I had a longer forking and I lost the leaders’ group. However I stayed focused on doing my own orienteering and so I managed to complete a technically clean race. I launched my teammate about 30 seconds behind the leaders and I was very confident that he could do well also because I knew he had shorter forking, in fact he quickly came to the front and that’s when I started dreaming of a medal. But even when we managed to take a gap together with the Czech republic, the first team from Switzerland was still very close, which meant that even though a medal for Switzerland was practically certain I could be left without one.
But seeing that Switzerland 1 could not close the gap I started to think that the dream could really come true and even though the Czech came up first at the last control and we lost the win by a few seconds it was an incredible moment and a silver medal worth almost as much as a gold medal (which still came to GMOK thanks to Jiri).
And I have to say that I am very happy with this performance because finally after a week of unsatisfactory performances and stomach problems I was able to race to my potential.
Vi skickar med ett stort grattis till medaljörerna och ser fram mot nästa gång vi ser dem på tävlingar och i klubbstugan.
